Layer one: stored water

Stored water is easy to count and available immediately. Choose containers you can safely handle, protect them from contamination, and rotate supplies based on the container and water source you use.

Layer two: treatment

Treatment gives you more flexibility when water quality is uncertain. The right method depends on the contaminants you are trying to address.

Layer three: additional sources

Rain capture, atmospheric collection, and other local sources can extend a plan. Each source brings its own weather, legal, treatment, and equipment considerations.

Layer four: household decisions

Drinking is only one use. Cooking, hygiene, pets, and sanitation also matter. Planning by use helps you avoid spending potable water where lower quality water may be suitable.
